Meet Sean McKenzie
Neighbor. Advocate. Sustainability. Leader.
I’m Sean — a proud Broomfield resident, husband, and longtime advocate for communities that thrive when people are empowered, heard, and cared for. I’m running for City Council in Ward 4 because I believe this is a critical moment to protect what we love about Broomfield while making smart, future-ready decisions for our generations ahead.
Whether I’m helping lead sustainability initiatives, mentoring youth, or working alongside neighbors to tackle local challenges, I bring the same commitment: listening deeply, acting transparently, and always following through.
A Career Rooted in Service and Sustainability
My professional background spans nearly a decade in consulting, where I worked with Fortune 500 companies, cities, and nonprofits to design and implement sustainability strategies successfully.
I am pursuing a Master’s in Sustainability Leadership from the University of Cambridge and have advised C-suite executives on how to make Net-Zero goals real. However, I’ve always known the most meaningful change happens at the local level. That’s why I’ve dedicated time here in Broomfield to serving on the Advisory Committee on Environmental Sustainability (ACES) and mentoring high schoolers through our Youth Advisory Council.
Our Home, Our Future
My wife and I recently got married, and we’ve chosen Broomfield as the place to build our future together. From the open spaces we love to walk through, to the vibrant sense of community that shows up in everyday moments, this city feels like home in every way.
We want to grow our lives here — and eventually raise a family in a place that reflects our values: sustainability, inclusivity, and community. That’s why I’m so committed to preserving what makes Broomfield special while ensuring that it remains a place where future generations can thrive, afford to live, and feel a true sense of belonging.
Leadership That Listens
I’m a collaborator, a doer, and someone who believes government should be both transparent and responsive. Whether it's ensuring new development reflects community input or making budget decisions that align with our values, I believe in leadership that starts with listening.
I first learned the power of listening through the 5,000 Role Models of Excellence program in Miami. My mentor there didn’t just talk at us — he modeled what it meant to be present, curious, and quiet enough to truly hear someone’s experience.
One of the clearest through-lines of my work has been College MAP (Mentoring for Access and Persistence), where I mentored first-generation high school students as they navigated college applications, financial aid, and finding their voice. Some of the most meaningful progress didn’t come from offering the right answer — it came from asking the right questions and creating space for students to feel seen, heard, and empowered.
Why I’m Running
Broomfield is growing and that’s not a bad thing. It does mean we need thoughtful, proactive leadership to ensure that growth is sustainable, equitable, and community-driven. I’m running for City Council to bring a clear-eyed, solutions-focused voice to the table — one that always puts people first and the long-term health of our city at the center of every decision.
-
It was a mix of timing and conviction. After years of working in sustainability and impact on a global scale, I realized that the most meaningful changes often start close to home. With Broomfield growing rapidly, this felt like the right moment to step up — to help protect what we love while shaping a future that works for everyone. And after getting married recently and choosing to build our life here, I felt an even deeper connection to this community and its future.
-
I bring both real-world experience and a neighbor-first mindset with a global lens that’s rare in local politics. I’ve spent the past eight years helping cities, companies, and communities across the U.S. and abroad tackle complex challenges — from decarbonizing global supply chains to advancing climate resilience in a variety of sectors.
Through my postgraduate work at the University of Cambridge and international consulting roles, I’ve learned how systems change happens — and how to bring those insights home to places like Broomfield. What sets me apart isn’t just the experience, it’s how I lead: by listening first, collaborating across divides, and staying grounded in what matters most to everyday people.
-
You can usually find me walking around Broomfield’s trails with my wife and our puppies, exploring local coffee spots, or nerding out on quantum economics or my Rubik’s Cube (yes, I’m that guy). I’m also big on mentoring local youth and volunteering with the community. Staying plugged in to what’s happening here is both fun and grounding — it’s why I love this place.
The future is built by those who show up — not just with ideas, but with heart, grit, and a willingness to listen.
